Overview of the Matriculation
The Matriculation education system in Tamil Nadu existed as a popular separate board before being integrated with Samacheer Kalvi. It is known for its standard, conceptual learning, and English standard.
What is Matriculation?
The Matriculation syllabus is followed by private schools for classes up to 10, known as Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) or Secondary School Certificate (SSC).
After completing Matriculation exams, students can pursue higher secondary (class 11 & 12) following the state board syllabus.
When was Matriculation implemented
The Matriculation board education system was initially implemented in the late 1970s, and it is designed to improve English proficiency, analytical skills, and conceptual learning, and follow a standardised local syllabus.
Why did Matriculation change into Samacheer Kalvi?
The Matriculation system was changed into Samacheer Kalvi to follow a uniform syllabus to avoid disparities between different boards. To ensure all students get equal and quality education.
Matriculation Syllabus and Curriculum
The private schools follow the uniform syllabus of the Samacheer Board. But still, some private schools use additional matriculation subjects with an aligned state board syllabus for core subjects.
Core Subjects of Matriculation Syllabus
The core subjects are Tamil, English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. This board also gives importance to additional subjects like computer, Hindi, moral science, and general knowledge.
Structure of Curriculum
This curriculum was structured as a strong foundation for higher education. It generally spans from class 1 to 10, being the secondary level of education and follows state board subjects and additional subjects.
Why is the Matriculation board different from Samacheer Kalvi
This board is structured based on preparing students for competitive exams. It often introduces concepts earlier than the state board to keep students well-prepared for exams.
Most private schools follow this board. It is no longer an independent syllabus integrated with the state board.
